On the Last Day He's Four

I have headphones in sitting in my favorite spot to work and I turned on Pandora.  I can never remember what station I was last listening to, so it's always a surprise what will come on right away, and One Sweet World just made my whole entire morning.

I'm having flashbacks to sitting in the back of a big van at 15 (maybe even 14?) on my way to Canada to canoe and camp for 2 weeks and follow it up with white-water rafting that was way beyond our capabilities and amazing.  The headphones are in and I'm listening to my cd player and watching insane scenery pass me by, getting pringles at gas stations and feeling the most freedom I've ever felt in my life.  I'm living in Teva sandals and bathing suits and shorts and the most tan I'll probably ever be in my entire life and feeling more peace than I've ever felt and it's the place I go back to years later when I need to think of somewhere that makes me happy.  Sitting on pine needles in the middle of the woods on the edge of a lake, eating cheese and crackers for lunch, jumping off of cliffs into lakes, dirty as hell and loving it.

I snap myself back to right now and look at my list of things I need to do today.  Pay bills. Clean and prep for Nick's 5th birthday party tomorrow.  Fold laundry.  Pause.

It was more than half of my lifetime ago that we went on those trips, two (three?) summers in a row, all to the soundtrack of Dave Matthews Band and Live and Sublime and I have no idea how on earth I came out of those trips not drinking or smoking, but I did.

I remind myself not to forget that today is an early dismissal and that I need to make pizza dough for us to make pizza tonight.

Tomorrow I'll wake up and be the mother of a 5 year old and 6-almost-7 year old.  I'll be a wife of almost 8 years. Tomorrow morning it will be rainy and I'll entertain 4 and 5 year olds with cupcakes and hard hats and cardboard box construction projects and I'll follow it up with dinner with family for his birthday and dinner again with family the next day for his birthday and in between I'll meet with friends to talk about the state of education and where it puts us and our kids and what we want to see change and I'll try to sneak in a few minutes here and there to choose flower seeds for my backyard flower farm this summer.  I'll wrestle with what to do about next year and job hunting and childcare and wish to just spend my summer with my hands in the dirt, watching plants and kids grow.

I'll remind myself that we need to plan a family camping trip this summer.  I've said it every year for years and we don't do it and I need to go and be outside with my family.  I need my kids to feel that freedom and the disconnect from the world for a while and be dirty and carefree and I need to sit around a campfire late at night with my husband and re-align my outdoor memories so that they catch up with my life now.  I'll play some Dave Matthews Band on my phone and it can still be the soundtrack, but it can be the one my kids remember from childhood instead.  My husband will choose for them to hear something else and it'll all melt into new memories of them being little and dirty and happy and all of us together.

Day 2: Right Now

Today was: school drop offs and pick ups, time alone with a cup of coffee and a keyboard to edit and document and write, Parent's Night at Pre-School.
Drinking: a cup of coffee in the morning to try to curb the soda habit and tea in the afternoon
Listening to:  The same old stations, today I turned on Frank Sinatra.  I'm kind of in a rut with my Pandora stations, anything you're loving right now and want to share?
Watching: The Grownups -Too much tv after hardly any all summer. We're working our way through all of the inappropriateness of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. So many good shows finally are back! My current favorites - New Girl, The Mindy Project, Parenthood, Nashville, Modern Family, Parks and Rec.  I don't like it, but I watched the end of Breaking Bad anyway-  I couldn't stop! Can't wait to see again soon - Orange is the New Black, Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey. The Kids - The Magic School Bus and Mighty Machines (endlessly)
Wishing: for more money, but thankful for always having just enough
Feeling: excited for her to start Girl Scouts next week
Thankful: endlessly for Grandparents nearby and the relationships my children are able to have with all 4 of their grandparents
Finishing: an Artifact Uprising book of the first 6 months of this year on Instagram
Enjoying: this perfect fall weather
Planning: Halloween costumes, Christmas presents and traditions and schedules

Want to share, too? What's going on in your life right now?

Day 1: Why I Document

It's a cliché:  I document because I want to remember.  I have a terrible memory for details and I know I'll forget things.  So I choose to write about it or photograph it.  I waver on how self-indulgent it is to document it publicly here, but at the end of the day I'm glad it's here. The number of photographs have gotten a little out of hand and I regularly wonder what on earth will happen to all of them long-term, but for the moment it just feels good to do something to document because it forces me to stay grounded and present.  I don't click away with a camera non-stop.  I've gotten a lot better at that (and love the way Sheena talk about it here) but I capture things I want to remember.  The imperfect, the messy, the sad, the sweet...it's all there.

And as I get started on this 31 Days of Documenting the Everyday adventure and share a bit more than my normal, there's one thing I want to make so so so so so so clear that I've slowly accepted: I don't think your days and moment have to be perfect to deserve to be captured.  There's never going to be a perfect, but there will be your kids and life happening right in front of you and that is absolutely enough, that's all you need to capture.

I'd love to hear from you! Why do you document or want to start documenting more? Let me know in the comments below!

31 Days of Documenting the Everyday

I'm taking a deep breath as I start this.  Because 31 days straight of blogging inspired by the nester?  It feels a little bit overwhelming (or maybe just crazy.)  But I'm doing it.  I thought long and hard about if I wanted to join the fun, then once I decided that I wanted to, I thought long and hard about what I could possibly talk about for 31 days. I toyed with 5 zillion ideas, but it always came back to one thing: Our days, our fleeting moments, just our plain old everyday.

I struggle often with why it is that I want to blog, but I think this is one of the hugest parts.  I love to capture our everyday and I love to share it not to project any sort of ideal, perfect life but to share that the imperfection and everyday mess and chaos ARE the beauty and are enough.

This is going to be a combination: part to help you to document your own days and part for me to spend some time sharing and remember my own.  Have something you'd love to see me address? Please let me know and I'll gladly try to include it!

Want to read a whole lot of others who are also sharing for 31 days? Head over here to check them out!

So, this is where is starts.  Tomorrow is Day 1.  I'll post daily like normal, then also add the post links below to have them all in one spot.
